WOMEN’S IMAGING SERVICES
Mammography: offered at most Baptist Health locations
Mammography is a specific type of imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system to examine breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used to aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women
The Mammography Accreditation Program provides facilities with peer review and constructive feedback on staff qualifications, equipment, quality control, quality assurance, image quality and radiation dose. The 1992 Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) requires that all mammography facilities in the United States be accredited.
Ultrasound imaging is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. Ultrasound imaging of the breast produces a picture of the internal structures of the breast.
A biopsy is the removal of tissue in order to examine it for disease. Breast biopsy is used to determine if a lump in the breast is cancerous or benign. It can be performed a number of ways:
- Stereotactic (mammographically-guided)
The Breast MRI Accreditation Program provides facilities performing breast MRI procedures with peer review and constructive feedback on their staff’s qualifications, equipment, quality control, quality assurance, MR safety policies and image quality.
MRI of the breast is not a replacement for mammography or ultrasound imaging but rather a supplemental tool that has many important uses, and offers valuable information about many breast conditions.
Ultrasound is safe and painless, and produces pictures of the inside of the body using sound waves. We offer both pelvic and obstetrical ultrasound procedures:
- Pelvic Ultrasound: Provides pictures of the structures and organs in the lower abdomen and pelvis.
- Obstetrical Ultrasound: Provides pictures of an embryo or fetus within a woman’s uterus, as well as the mother’s uterus and ovaries.
